THE COWAMUNGA CHALLENGE
Goal: Raise R50 000 on behalf of The Cows and CHOC
Ride: Approximately 330KM per day
Time: Complete the race in 3 days!

I am absolutely passionate about cycling which I’ve been doing for the last 12 years. My main disciplines are mountain biking however I cross-train on the road  and with an occasional Xterra or triathlon! As long as I am outside and sitting on a bike I’m happy!

My dad passed away on the 29th May this year and so I decided to set myself a challenge. It was to do a race unlike any that I had done before and race it on behalf of a worthy cause and honour my dad, who has been a major inspiration in my life. The Munga, an extreme endurance event, seemed the obvious choice.

The challenge inspired action: given that I am always on the look out for supporting charities both personally and through my company what better way to do it than by something that I love cycling! This led me to The Cows who fund raise for CHOC. CHOC is an organisation that provides care and raises awareness for kids with cancer and after chatting to them, I decided that the my challenge would be to complete the race in 3 days, raising awareness and funds for CHOC.

One of the great things about cycling is that it takes one all over the country where you get to meet interesting people while exploring parts of South Africa that one rarely has the chance to visit. I have completed a number of stage races over the years, the most challenging of which have been:

• 2010 – Cape Epic
• 2011 -  Half and full Ironman South Africa
• 2014 -  Swazi Frontier
• 2015 -  Wines2Whales
• 2016 -  Tour of Good Hope Road Championchips
• 2016 -  Sani2C

When I am not out on various cycling escapades I run my own travel companies, Checkout Travel (retail) and Check Tours (wholesale). I don’t have any specific talents and yet have come to realise over the years that anyone can do anything and it is just a matter of putting your mind to it and understanding how badly you want to achieve it!

I love the journey you travel on from your training, sweating it out, taking part in the event and then coming back for more! It’s a cleansing of the mind and body and so I am extremly excited about embarking on this adventure, working with CHOC and finally putting it all together on the big day to make it happen!

I would be extremely grateful if you would consider making a donation to this worthy cause to help me reach my fundraising target. Please click on the link below to donate online:https://www.givengain.com/activist/130428/projects/12574/

The Cows
The Cows™ were started in 2008 by a group of 8 enthusiastic cyclists keen to make a difference and raise money as an independent fund raising arm for CHOC. With more than R25 million raised for CHOC since their inception, there is no stopping the stampede. The energy of the herd is infectious and with the motto ‘Love Living Life’, The Cows™ guarantee plenty of FUN in this fundraising challenge.

For the 2015 94.7 Cycle Challenge, The Cows had over 300 riders take part raising approximately R3.2m for a variety of CHOC programmes: (i) Accommodation assist with house running costs at The CHOC Lodge, Durban; CHOC Houses Saxonwold, Diepkloof and Pretoria. (ii) Psychosocial Support -fund the salaries of 7 psychosocial staff members (Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Free State) (iii) Programme vehicle (CHOC Free State) (iv) Essential maintenance to CHOC Houses - Pietermaritzburg, Pretoria and East London.

CHOC
CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA plays a key role in providing care for children diagnosed with cancer across South Africa. It is a country wide organisation that provides the highest level of care required to treat childhood cancer and supports the children diagnosed with cancer as well as their families. Furthermore, the Paediatric Oncology Units in major government hospitals are supported by funds raised by CHOC to enable the Doctors and Nurses to provide quality treatment to children diagnosed with cancer.
