The Old Rectory in Plett Review

Looking for a memorable stay in Plettenberg Bay?

Look no further than the Old Rectory, a stunning 4-star hotel steeped in history and offering a delightful blend of comfort and charm which I recently visited for a night’s stay with my wife while we celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. Located in central Plett, near Hobie Beach, the Old Rectory is a national monument dating back to 1777 when it served as a timber storage facility for the Dutch East India Company. The hotel boasts 18 suites which are divided between garden and pool facing rooms. We stayed in a garden-facing room, which was light, breezy, and spacious, with a beach-inspired colour scheme that promoted a relaxed, laid-back vibe. Something to note is that some of the rooms(garden facing) have showers only and others have a bath rub.

The main hotel area is a treat for history buffs, with original walls from the 18th century still intact. The restaurant, named 1777, offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, with Dutch East India Company logos adorning the chairs and original yellowwood floors adding to the cozy, welcoming feel. The food was exceptional, with the A-typical bunny chow being a standout dish for me. The breakfast buffet was equally impressive, with a variety of options from the buffet or available to order from the menu.

The hotel’s spa offers a range of wellness treatments, including a relaxing 120-minute massage that was a true highlight of our stay.

There is a pool, perfect for those days when you need a break from the beach, which is just a short walk away (approx. 50 meters). The surrounding area both within and outside of the hotel is filled with lush vegetation and a historical building across the road, adding to the picturesque setting

The service at the Old Rectory was warm and friendly, with staff going above and beyond to ensure our stay was enjoyable. The hotel is a great choice for couples but having said that given its prime location it does also make for the perfect family holiday getaway with spacious rooms and a pool. Something to note is that the restaurant’s menu changes seasonally, so be sure to explore other local restaurants during your stay. In conclusion, our stay at the Old Rectory was a delightful experience. We highly recommend this property for anyone visiting Plettenberg Bay. It offers a unique blend of history, comfort, and character, making it a perfect choice for couples or families looking for a memorable stay in this beautiful coastal town.
